A commenter on my earlier blog post asked me if I could point him in the right direction on for information about making WordPress themes. So, I thought I would expand on that idea a bit and post some links to sites that helped me get started.

Way back in the day, circa 1998, when I started learning about web design, a man by the name of Joe Burns ran an HTML tutorial website called HTML Goodies. I hate to think about all the hours I spent studying Joe’s “So you wanna learn, huh?” This was back in the hay day of HTML 3.2. I can’t tell you how excited I was when HTML 4.0 came out… It seems as soon as I had HTML 4.0 down pat, along came the XHTML/CSS standard… and we started all over again.

Fast-forward a few years. One day I was killing some time in a bookstore and I came across a book titled Designing With Web Standards by Jeffery Zeldman, and my whole web development thinking process changed. Out with the old <table> based layouts, in with the new standards-based design. Actually, come to think of it, I bought Web Standards Solutions by Dan Cederholm at the same time as Zeldman’s DWWS.

Looking back, I guess I’ve done web development professionally since 2001. I wonder if there will be an old folks home for web developers like me someday. I can see it now, a bunch of old geezers sitting around arguing about web standards, CSS parsers, and who had the best box model hack.

I’m rambling now, on with the links!

Firebug – Web Development Evolved

I will probably add more to this list later. I used to have a ton of useful websites bookmarked. They probably ended up in the same place as my missing socks.
